Ian on Liathach

Ian Stephenson

Ian holds the Mountain Leader Award and has been working within the outdoor industry as a mountain walking guide for many years. Based in North West Scotland, this is an area he has been roaming through for most of his life. His local knowledge will help you get the most out of your time in the Highlands whatever you want to do - be it climb Ben Nevis, Britain's highest mountain, backpack through the remote wilderness areas of Wester Ross, explore the Glencoe hills or scramble the crest of the Skye Cuillin. You can rest assured that Ian will help you pick the routes that are best for you, get you closer to the wildlife and environment, interpret the history and culture of the region, and bring the landscape through which you are passing alive whilst ensuring you have lots of fun!

Apart from his love of the Highlands of Scotland, Ian has plenty of experience further afield. As a youngster family holidays were spent exploring the Yorkshire Moors and Dales and this is an area which is still visited often, especially for its' wealth of easily accessible rock-climbing venues. Ian also spent eight years in the English Lake District, working with the Lakeland Climbing Centre as an instructor and manager. He is still a regular visitor to this unique and easily accessible area.

West Ridge of Sgur Nan Gillean, Skye Ian has a wealth of experience throughout Europe, especially in Spain and the Canary islands which he considers to be an excellent arena for exploring a beautiful environment and adventurous pursuits. A favourite mountain area is The Picos De Europa in Northern Spain to which he has led many trips.

Latin America is another destination Ian is thoroughly familiar with, having travelled there extensively and led expeditions to the Andes of Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador regularly over the last 10 years.

Originally trained as a professional musician, Ian enjoys all sorts of music, both playing and listening. He is a fluent Spanish speaker and through regular work with French clients his French is not bad either!

Partner Organisations And Leaders

In a Lakeland hostelry Especially with group walking holidays and treks of longer duration, a larger team is sometimes needed to ensure your comfort and enjoyment. To this end Ian sometimes works with trusted partner organisations and Leaders who have demonstrated the same professionalism and enthusiasm for what they are doing. These relationships have been built up over many years, and you as the client can gain the benefit of them.

Currently Ian works regularly with International Mountain Leader Merv Capewell, The Lakeland Climbing Centre, International Mountain Guide Andy Owen and Walkabout Scotland. He is involved in the training and assessment of leaders for a major walking holiday organisation, HF Holidays, and acts as a consultant, designing programmes and itineraries for several other companies, both here in the UK, in Europe, and in the USA.
