Scrambling

A Hands On Experience

Scrambling is the natural extension of hillwalking from the the point where you're using your hands very occasionally on an awkward step to the point where you're often using your hands (and feet!) to move over predominantly rocky terrain. It's exhilarating, rewarding, gets you to places you couldn't otherwise reach. Above all it's tremendous fun.

Often described as the grey area between pure rock climbing and "mere" walking, scrambling is much more than that - there's the satisfaction of unlocking an intricate route on a bold mountain feature, the joy of coordinated movement (easier on the legs, heart and lungs than toiling up a grassy slope!) and the thrill of being in a challenging rocky environment.

Managing Safety

West Ridge of SgurrNan Gillean Rock climbing relies on lots of equipment to manage safe progress whereas scrambling relies on moving smoothly and efficiently with the minimum of sophisticated rope tricks. Careful assessment of the route, the party and the conditions is essential and that's where having an empathetic, competent and experienced Leader with local knowledge pays off.

If you're new to scrambling we take some time to let you get the feel of the rock and allow your confidence to grow whilst in a non-threatening environment. Scotland has a wealth of scrambling routes from the very easiest to alpine-style mountaineering epics so there's always plenty to choose from. You can move on to more challenging routes knowing that you'll enjoy them, not fear them!

Equipment

Cioch Terrace

You don't need to have any fancy equipment to go scrambling - just comfortable stiffish boots and your normal walking gear. You'll be provided with a helmet and your leader will carry a rope just to reassure you on any tricky moments. If you're not already an experienced scrambler you'll receive full instruction in how to manage the risks.
